The Piccolo trumpet is the smallest in the trumpet family and are built to play in A or Bb. Piccolo trumpets use a separate leadpipe for each key and reach a pitch one octave higher than a standard Bb trumpet. The Bb Piccolo trumpet contains tubing that is one-half the length of a standard size Bb instrument. In order to allow modern Piccolo trumpet players to perform difficult trumpet portions of Baroque music, they use different tonguing and air pressure techniques. The mouthpiece is shallower and with this type of trumpet, it has a fourth valve which will lower the pitch of the music coming out of the instrument by a fourth.
